Film Producers Make it Happen

Over the years, I have coached filmmakers in how to raise money. Fundraising is tactical and strategic. A much harder skill to teach is that of producing. What is a producer? From my perspective a producer is a) the one with the vision and b) the one who makes that vision a reality by raising the money needed to make the film.
Many writers and directors look down on producers. They assume that producers are not creative but have knowledge and access to money. They fantasize that one of these non-creatives will show up and find the money to make their film.
But when I work with a filmmaker, I help them see themselves as a producer. This is not so much tactics and strategy but mindset. The producer is the one who carries the ball and runs with it. The producer is the one making it happen. The producer talks about money and business - all the time. The producer is the one who collects the Best Picture Oscar.
