The first time I did any real research on the Christian film industry was when I published an article in 2018: https://cinesourcemagazine.com/index.php?/site/comments/christian_films_arising/
I wrote about several films, a couple of which had been very successful. But today, Angel Studios’ "Sound of Freedom" has made over $100M and the landscape has radically changed.
Now 6 years later, I have just attended my second faith-based film festival, this time with clients with two features there. In that article, I was curious as to the level of diversity in the field, and was surprised to find that there was quite a lot of diversity in terms of actors, but there was also a wide diversity of genres and approaches.
At both the Festivals, I - of course - could mostly be found in the seminars, particularly those on distribution and screenwriting. The 2018 article mentions Rich Christiano, and last week, I took a class with him on distribution. It also mentions "God’s Not Dead 2", and I took a screenwriting class with the screenwriter, who also mentioned that they have already made "God’s Not Dead 5". Phew!
One of the messages we heard loud and clear was that Christian films must broaden the spectrum from inspirational drama into other genres. As you will see in the Film Recommendations, every genre is represented in the faith-based world. Not only are you not required to make an inspirational drama or melodrama, several speakers warned that doing so is limited and taking advantage of the audience.
Attendees at the Festival came from many cultures and spoke many languages. The diversity of the field is rich and there is wide representation. On the other hand, sales of Christian films tends towards US audiences, and to be fair, this is the case with films of all types.
If you are interested in making a faith-based film, there needs to be an element of a character overcoming their struggles through faith. But other than that, this world is open to diversity in many ways, including genre, and is growing at a rapid pace with audiences developing every day.
