Have you ever spent hours scrolling through LinkedIn, hunting for that ONE person who knows a billionaire?
Maybe you’ve sent a "quick" DM to someone like me, or another film consultant, asking for a "simple introduction" to an investor. You think you’re being proactive. You think you’re showing HUSTLE.
But I have to tell you the truth, and it might be a little blunt: You are making a critical mistake that is actually pushing the money AWAY from your project.
Whether you are a first-time filmmaker or a veteran with a few features under your belt, the urge to find a "shortcut" to the money is real. But there are NO SHORTCUTS when it comes to raising hundreds of thousands, or millions, of dollars.
In this post, I am going to REVEAL why cold-asking for introductions is a death sentence for your film financing strategy, and what you should be doing instead to build a solid foundation for your career.

I see it every single day. A filmmaker reaches out and says, "Joanne, I have this incredible script. It’s a Nicholl's award-winner. Can you just introduce me to some of your investors?"
Here is what most filmmakers think is happening: I send an email, the investor opens it, sees your brilliant project, and writes a check.
WRONG.
That introduction is NOT just a door opening. It is a REPUTATION TRANSFER.
When I, or anyone else who has spent decades building trust in this industry, introduce you to an investor, I am handing you my credit score. I am telling that investor, "I trust this person with your money, and I am willing to risk my own relationship with you to prove it."
If I introduce a stranger who turns out to be disorganized, dishonest, or simply unable to manage a large team, MY reputation is the one that gets burned. And in the world of high-stakes independent film financing, reputation is the only currency that actually matters.

People ask me all the time why I don't just "pass out" my list of investors to the filmmakers in my coaching programs. The fact is, even as "The Film Vision Alchemist," I would NEVER introduce someone to an investor unless I have known them for a significant amount of time: sometimes years.
I need to be able to vouch for more than just your "talent." Talent is everywhere. I need to vouch for your:
• INTEGRITY: Do you do what you say you’re going to do?
• HONESTY: Are you transparent about the risks and the realistic costs of production?
• MANAGEMENT SKILLS: Can you handle a $2M budget without it disappearing into a black hole of "creative choices"?
• STAMINA: Will you stick with this project for the 3–5 years it takes to reach global distribution?
If I haven't seen you navigate a crisis, handle a rejection, or manage a smaller crowdfunding campaign, I can't vouch for you. And if I can't vouch for you, I won't introduce you. PERIOD.

I know, I know. You’ve spent $500 on a film pitch deck template and you think it’s the most beautiful thing in the world. But here is the secret I share with all my clients: Investors give to PEOPLE who make EXCELLENT PROJECTS.
The project is the vehicle, but you are the driver. If the investor doesn't trust the driver, they don't care how fast the car is.
When you ask a stranger for an intro, you are essentially asking them to lie. You’re asking them to tell an investor they "know" you're a safe bet, when they don't know you at all. This is why how to raise money for a film is 90% relationship management and 10% creative pitching.

Most filmmakers approach film funding with pure willpower. They blast out 500 LinkedIn messages, they enter every contest, and they "hope" something sticks.
Hope is not a strategy.
I truly believe that the struggle is OVER when you replace willpower with a proven framework.
Whether it's my Film Box Office S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Formula, the goal is to stop acting like a "starving artist" and start acting like a CREATIVE CEO.
A CEO doesn't ask strangers for favors. A CEO builds a network of peers, mentors, and advisors over time. They understand that a "warm" introduction from a mutual friend is worth 1,000 cold emails.

If you want to be part of the Filmmaker Success community, there are a few things you need to accept right now:
1. NO PERSONAL DEBT: We do not fund movies with credit cards or second mortgages. This is a business, not a gamble.
2. NO SAVINGS: You do not empty your retirement account to pay for a color grade.
3. STRATEGY IS KING: If you don't have a plan for distribution before you shoot, you don't have a movie: you have an expensive hobby. I have guided hundreds of filmmakers to secure funding through investors, major donors, grants, and successful crowdfunding campaigns (40+ and counting!). None of them did it by "tricking" a stranger into an introduction. They did it by becoming the kind of person people wanted to introduce.

So, how do you get the meeting? How do you find the film financing you need if you don't have the "inner circle" yet?
You build it.
• Stop Pitching, Start Connecting: Instead of asking for money or intros, ask for advice. Ask for a 15-minute "clarity call" to learn about their journey.
• Deliver Value First: Are you supporting other filmmakers? Are you showing up in the community? Are you a person of "Kindness, Strategy, and Effectiveness"?
• Show Your Track Record: If you haven't made a feature, make a high-end short. If you haven't raised $1M, raise $25k through a crowdfunding campaign to prove you can handle other people's money.
• Be Patient: Relationships that lead to million-dollar checks take months, if not years, to cultivate.
I know you have a story that can change the world. I know you have the creative vision. But do you have the business strategy to match?
If you are stuck, lost, or just plain tired of the "no's," it might be time to change your approach. We don't just talk about making movies; we talk about making them PROFITABLE.
Make Movies. Make Money. Make the World a Better Place.
That is my mantra. And it starts with you taking responsibility for your own network and your own reputation.
